Fall cover crop

In late summer we planted radishes as a cover crop where the new garden will be next spring.  This root crop benefits the soil, adding organic matter and preventing erosion.  It also benefits goats.  The herd chomped on the crunchy fresh greens every day this fall.  The roots when fully developed also provide a tasty winter treat.  Crunch crunch.

Update: Levi & Walker

Last fall, Christine from Capsand Creamery in Vermont contacted me to discuss the potential of buying a blue-eyed buckling from Sugar Moon Kizzy/God's Love James.  I was excited about this and, wanting to bring new blood into my own herd, wondered if she would trade a buckling from her herd for one from mine.  The answer was "Yes!"  So in the Spring, both of us awaited kidding time with expectation.... and Kizzy and Andromeda kidded healthy vigorous bucklings!  When the boys were weaned, Christine traveled here to Northern New York from Vermont and the trade was made.  Capsand Creamery Walker and Sweet Land Levi have been growing well this summer and both have the calm and endearing personalities I treasure in Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats.....

Fudge will be available again during the Christmas Season at Evergreen View Christmas Tree Farm, as well as our new line of farmstead goat's milk soap!  :)

If you have never tried goat's milk fudge you are in for a real treat.  Our homemade fudge is made with care, from scratch.  We use simple, pure ingredients including pure cane sugar, real butter, and pure vanilla extracts.  It is preservative-free, and does not contain corn syrup, marshmallow fluff, confectioners sugar, or artificial fats/flavorings.  Each batch is made fresh, in small quantities.

Nigerian Dwarf goats produce the best milk for this goat's milk fudge.  Fudge made with goat's milk is authentically creamy and rich:  it does not change the flavor, only the consistency.  We use only milk produced by our own small herd of goats and pay strict attention to their diet and health, so that you get the best tasting milk in your fudge.  Each small batch is individually cooked on the stovetop, hand-stirred, and formed into a block and cut.

Fudge should be stored in an airtight container.  Goat's milk fudge is naturally soft.  Storing it in the refrigerator will keep it a firmer consistency and extend the shelf life of this preservative-free fudge.  Fudge can also be put into the freezer for longer-term storage so that you will have plenty of time to enjoy it.  Flavors are available in 1/4 and 1/2 lb bricks, wrapped in ecofriendly and food-safe cellophane.

New Addition

the sweet & gentle Capsand Creamery Walker
We are excited to introduce Capsand Creamery Walker to our herd!  He is a tricolor belted buckskin with white poll and frosting.  His sire is Dragonfly IH Bandito Burrito *S & his dam is Capsand Creamery Andromeda.  He is bringing great genetics and dairy potential for the future of Sweet Land Nigerians.  Christine brought him from her farmstead in Vermont in exchange for Sweet Land Levi, the blue-eyed buckling of Kizzy & James, born this spring.  Levi will have a wonderful home in the Green Mountain State with Christine’s beautiful herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats.  It will be exciting to see the future potential of these two bucks!

Goat's Milk Soap has superior moisturizing properties
I could definitely become addicted to Christine's sea salt caramels!
Along with Walker, Christine brought along some goodies made from her farmstead goat’s milk.  The sea salt caramels are delicious - the perfect blend of sweetness and saltiness, with a depth of flavor and creaminess that only comes from high butterfat Nigerian Dwarf milk.  The bar of cold process soap, scented with peppermint essential oil, has abundant lather and is extremely moisturizing.  She kindly shared the recipe for the soap with us - and we are excited to try it this summer.  Finally, she made some lovely lip balm made with beeswax and honey from her own hives, and a card with her illustration of a goat kid.  It was lovely visiting with Christine, talking goats, and enjoying her wonderful products made with amazing goat's milk!

Spring Kids 2014

The tasks of kidding time include bottle feeding, disbudding, castrating, vaccinating, and tattooing for registration.  We spend lots of time with the baby kids to ensure they are friendly with humans and well-mannered.  They also learn to eat hay and grain and drink water from a pail by modeling the older herd members.  We want to ensure that each kid has the best possible start in life.  All kids we sell are disbudded, vaccinated for CDT, come with registration papers (if applicable), and wethered (for castrated males/pets) no sooner than 8 weeks.

Triplets, Times Three!

Sweet Land Charlotte

This is the spring of triplets for Sweet Land Nigerians.  7 out of 9 of the babies have blue eyes, and 5 are girls.  Even first-year Calantha kidded 3 babies.  Her blonde-colored spitfire Charlotte has become an unexpected favorite.  Kizzy followed soon after with a handsome, robust buckling and - hallelujah - 2 beautiful vigorous doelings.  After a long run of males, it was worth the wait - Katima “powerful daughter” and Kaia “wise little one.”  Needless to say, we have high expectations for the milking capabilities of these girls next spring, a combination of their dam Kizzy and sire James.  Their strong and smart personalities have secured places in our hearts.  We hope the calm and steady buckling Levi will make a strong sire someday.

Finally, Calabash kidded triplets as well, 2 cute little doelings and a bonus buckling.  Like all Cala’s kids, they have sweet personalities with a bit of mischief mixed in.  Trillium will have her time in the spotlight later this year, paired with James in preparation for another lactation.  We are thankful all mamas and babies are healthy.  The pregnant mamas came through this winter of transitions with vigor and spunk, and proved again what versatile creatures goats are.  What better way to enjoy spring and the reward of hard work and dedication, in the sweet personalities and sparkly eyes of baby goats!
